Jam Zone Weekend
Ladies and gentlemen, events in Guyana don’t get much bigger than the Jamzone Summer Break (we prefer “August Break”, personally) and Beach Pageant slated for this Sunday. You can expect the entire Linden-Soesdyke corridor to be clogged with traffic, notwithstanding all the parking space Splashmin has put in.
This annual event, brought to you courtesy of the Hits and Jams Entertainment group, has evolved from the simple Miss Jamzone Pageant to a day of fun for the entire family. This Sunday the crowd can enjoy participatory events like the Frozen T-Shirt, Fear Factor, and Egg Throwing.
There's also going to be some hands-free entertainment as well with the likes of Alabama, First Born and x2 performing, while local designer Michelle Cole will be. The GT&T Model Search girls have also been selected and will be making their debut at Jam Zone.
The pageant is still the premier event however, and Miss Jamzone 2006 will drive away in a new car valued $2.2 million. The first runner-up will ride away a new scooter along with $240,000. The second runner-up will receive $60,000 and the third runner-up $40,000. Each non-finalist will receive $15,000. That's about enough for a consolation hairdo and a pedicure.
Avalanche is back

We got space. Avalanche is the one club in GT that is not an oven and sardine can on a packed night. |
The premier night club in Guyana has caught its stride again. From this weekend, you can expect Club Avalanche to be open every weekend night, bringing you the best music by GT’s top two DJs our boys Rawle and Kerwin.
Club Avalanche is back with a bang, after a not so brief hiatus of not opening too frequently. Starting this weekend, the weekends are going to get exciting again as the Club is opening Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday night is Mixed Music Night, with everybody free before 11 pm and paying only ½ price after. Saturday, DJs Rawle and Kerwin will be taking you way back with some Old School stuff and everybody is going to be free before 11 pm. Sundays, it’s a lethal combo Guinness and Ladies Night so when you finish collecting some sea breeze, take a chance and see if you can make up for that Monday morning depression by enjoying yourself as late as possible the night before. That’s a Weekend Confidential secret formula (patent pending) and it never fails to work…even if we do.
Club Sky 7 is still around, alive and kicking, and this Friday you can drop in and enjoy the Banks Happy Hour from 9-10 pm. You know a nice cold Banks (at a reduced price) goes perfectly with music from yester-year in all genres: reggae, funk, soca, rock and soul. And believe or not, the admission is free. On Saturday however, the rules change: ladies free up to 10.30 pm, ladies in white free all night. Men, you have to pay half price though.
Ronald Hollingsworth’s “Til a find a place” is set for the stage once again. The play revolves around the cantankerous Donna (played by Sonia Yarde), who refuses to move out of her friend’s house until she finds a place. Her brazen behaviour of bringing her boyfriend and others under the roof of the Lewis’ (played by Henry Rodney and Abiola Clarke) that provides the amusement for the production. It’s the sort of repulsive behaviour still common today, Hollingsworth, who now resides in the United States, says. His objective in staging the production is to scare people from keeping people including their “friends” at their house. “Til a find a place” was Hollingsworth’s first play. He wrote and directed 14 others before migrating to the United States. Get a taste of a classic this weekend at the National Cultural Centre, tomorrow and Sunday.
Colgrain Whyte
 |
After thirteen years of dominating the National Steel Pan Competitions in the Soloist and Pan Jazz categories, local steel pan maestro, Colgrain Whyte, has recently released his first album, “The Gospel According to Steel: Chapter 1”.
The first such album by a Guyanese, Whyte’s “Steel” draws heavily on his Christian roots in its seven original compositions. Two of the songs included have been winning solo pieces for the national competition.
“Steelpan has taken a plunge for the worse,” Whyte told WC, “and “Gospel” is basically the good news that all is not lost.”
According to Whyte, the instrumental pieces were all well received at a recent Gospel fest in Barbados where he shared the same stage with popular Caribbean artistes like Papa San and Lieutenant Stitchy
Produced at Kross Kolor Records’ Sound Garden Studios, with arrangement help form Trevor John, “The Gospel According to Steel: Chapter 1” is available at Matt’s Record Bar and Giftland Office Max.

Next week, believe it or not, Brutus will be in Brazil playing at three day rock festival in Boa Vista. Woodstock ain’t going to get ___ on this, we telling ya.
