CHEMISTRY teacher Calvin Sergeant, 24, of 41 Durban Street, Wortmanville, was yesterday remanded to prison on charges of robbery under arms and being in possession of firearm and ammunition without having licence.
Georgetown Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton informed the secondary school teacher that particulars of the indictable charges against him are, that on August 15, at Meadowbrook Gardens, Georgetown, being armed with a gun and in company of another person, he robbed Floyd Rawlins of one gold chain valued $200,000. Also on the said day, he had a .38 revolver in his possession, along with five matching rounds, without being the holder of a firearm licence. Attorney-at-law Mr. George Thomas, representing the accused, requested bail, noting that his client had no previous conviction. Thomas claimed his client had been struck down by a motor car and had lost consciousness. He said that when his client regained consciousness, he was at the East La Penitence Police Station and the charges were instituted against him. Thomas alleged that his client had also been beaten by police officers at the station, and the accused showed the court a wound on his left shoulder; but the magistrate informed the lawyer that the wound could have resulted from the accident which had allegedly occurred. Police Inspector Burgett Grant, prosecuting, objected to bail and informed the court that her facts differed from those of the attorney-at-law’s. She said the virtual complainant was at his girlfriend’s home when the accused and another person entered the yard, armed with a gun, and robbed him of his gold chain. Grant said the virtual complainant owns a motor car, with which he had chased behind the men who had robbed him, who had ridden away on pedal cycles. She said Rawlins struck the men down with his car, but the accomplice of the accused managed to escape. The prosecutor said the virtual complainant summoned a police mobile patrol, and the accused was taken to the police station. She said the gold chain was found on the car bonnet. Magistrate Octive-Hamilton refused to grant the accused bail, and set the matters for recall on September 18. |
