THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday morning in celebration of their 173rd anniversary held a wreath laying ceremony in memory of their Fallen Heroes numbering 56 ranks, who were killed in the line of duty from 1913 to 2012 at the Monument for Fallen Heroes, Police Officers’ Mess Compound, Eve Leary, Georgetown. Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee outlined the challenges of the ranks, who were killed in the line of duty over the years and urged members of the GPF not to shirk their responsibilities, because those who died gave their lives, stood in defence of law and order and took their responsibilities seriously. He added that with that the government will continue to support and provide the necessary tools for the GPF to effectively carry out their responsibilities to the people of Guyana. Rohee recalled that over the years the GPF has stood the test of time and noted that it is an organisation with the vested legal authority that maintains law and order across the length and breadth of the country and since the government rely heavily on the GPF to also maintain peace and good order as far as it is practicable it is their duty to support the organisation. The minister said that it is a fact that the GPF together with the civilian administration has the will, patience and understanding to withstand the challenges and with the backing of the government in providing the resources the GPF will execute its lawful duties. Acting Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell, who spoke of the fear that killings of members of the Force from 1913 to 2012 while on duty by criminals caused, but nevertheless ranks kept their jobs and the GPF is still going strong. ![]() He complimented the government through the Ministry of Home Affairs for the assistance given to the Force in which they successfully managed to restore some form of normalcy after the crime wave some years ago. The Top Cop recalled the times when criminal gangs ran amok in the country and how he used to wear two bullet proof vests while on his way to work in Berbice but also noted the changes from that time to now. He said that the GPF have been prepared and have become more security conscious, aware of what is going on around them and have vowed not to let that happen again in Guyana. Brumell assured that the GPF will continue to take control of the situation because the citizenry of this country have a right to walk freely and once criminal gangs are raising their heads the GPF will eliminate all gangs. He also expressed sympathy to the family members and relatives of the ranks who were killed in the line of duty and stated that they are gone but certainly not forgotten and would always be remembered and honoured. The ceremony yesterday morning started with the laying of wreaths by relatives of the deceased. At the ceremony, two minutes of silence were observed in memory of the Fallen Heroes, as well as 21-gun salute and reveille. There was also the Laying of Wreaths by Mr.Rohee, Mr. Brumell, and by representatives from the various police Divisions and Branches. Prayers also were recited, then Assistant Commissioner, Carol Lewis-Primo gave the Words of Comfort quoting several passages of scripture from the Bible and a hymn was rendered by the Joint Services Choir. |
