AT least three Brazilians were reported dead and others missing, after ‘Draga’,  a gold-mining dredge  capsized in the murky waters off  the Cuyuni River, Region Seven, at a point called ‘Warudi’ yesterday morning. Those confirmed dead include a female cook and two males.
On learning of the disaster, Bartica Police dispatched a search party to the area.  Late yesterday the search for the other missing persons continued.
Yesterday’s tragedy was the third such in just over a month.  Around June 8, a cargo vessel Miss Elisa capsised and went down in the Demerara River just opposite the Muneshwar’s wharf, after it developed difficulties on its way to Trinidad and was forced to turn back.  Hundreds of millions in dollars worth of cargo was lost, while the ship’s cook, 67-year-old Gerald Fraser called ’Chinee’ perished.  To date his remains have not been recovered.
Two weeks later another vessel capsized out at sea and two persons were feared drowned.
Police are continuing their investigations into yesterday’s tragedy.
