ONE of the now-worldwide Confucius Institutes, originating out of the People’s Republic of China, is to be established in Guyana, pending the outcome of early discussions involving the University of Guyana.
Confucius Institutes are Centres of Learning to promote China’s intellectual thought, historical and academic positions and propagation of the Chinese way of life generally. Many Western Universities and other institutions of Higher Learning have now accommodated these Institutes, providing as they do, a modernistic vehicle to develop insightful understandings of China’s history, development and current status in the international community. The well-known Chinese philosopher, Confucius (551–479 BC) is the namesake for the Institutes. Confucius was a pioneering master of Chinese philosophy with a profound influence on Chinese culture. Confucian thinking is the quintessence of Chinese values. The Confucianism he initiated takes benevolence and propriety as the highest moral doctrines to discipline people’s behaviour. His sayings and deeds are mainly recorded in The Analects of Confucius. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, during his recent, end-of-June visit to Beijing, on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of China-Guyana diplomatic relations, was invited to participate in the initial discussions with respect to the Guyana Confucius Institute. It is expected that the negotiations will be operationalised in the shortest possible time. Minister Anthony was also informed of the possibilities of more cultural exchanges as well as scholarship offers for Guyanese to study subjects in various areas of mutual cultural development. |
