Queen’s College edge St George’s to reach semis HAVING won their protest over The Business School, who withdrew from this year’s Digicel-sponsored nationwide Inter-secondary school football tournament, Queen’s College edged St George’s 2-1 at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground, to book a place in the semifinals of the Georgetown zone of the tournament. Stefan Rutherford struck a double in the 34th and 69th minutes for the victorious Thomas Lands and Camp Road-based Queen’s College lineup, who will now face the winner of tomorrow’s quarterfinal clash between Lodge Secondary and Tucville Secondary, which will be played at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground. A David Beckham-like free kick which was taken by Quincy Lawrence in the 76th minute, curved its way around the four-man wall that was set up by the eventual victors and nestled at the back of the net, reducing the deficit to one. But as they tried desperately to snare the equaliser and force the game into penalty kicks, they were met by a stubborn Stephen King who marshalled his team’s defence amicably throughout the encounter, even though his teammate Aftah Crandon was having a poor game at central defence. The action will continue today in the Ancient County of Berbice, with Tagore Memorial Secondary taking on All Saints Secondary at the latter’s ground. Seven more matches will be contested tomorrow across Guyana, beginning with the Regional final between Ash Educational Institute and Mahaicony Technical Institute at the Mahaicony Community Centre ground from 1530hrs. At the Tucville ground, Bygeval Secondary will oppose Ann’s Grove Secondary in the first encounter from 14;00hrs, followed by the Annandale Secondary and Bladen Hall Secondary clash at 16:00hrs. At the Carifesta Sports Complex ground, Tucville Secondary will oppose Lodge Secondary, who won their appeal over Carmel Secondary School, at 14:00hrs, while the feature clash will pit Government Industrial Technical Centre facing St Stanislaus College at 16:00hrs. Friendship Secondary and Institute of Professional Education will collide at the Grove Community Centre ground in the final of the East Bank Demerara zone from 17:30hrs while at the Wales Community Centre ground, Leonora Secondary and Uitvlugt Secondary will meet in their zone final from 15:30hrs. |
