According to police press release issued late yesterday, Ashby was chopped to the neck during an argument with another man over cigarettes, and that the suspect has since been arrested. A source close to the investigation told the Guyana Chronicle last evening that Ashby was rushed to the Port Kaituma Hospital after the altercation, and upon arrival there, he was seen gasping for breath as doctors tried desperately to save his life. Ashby reportedly arrived at the hospital at approximately 19:45hrs on Friday night, and by 20:06hrs the same night, he was pronounced dead. The source, who requested anonymity, told the Guyana Chronicle that Ashby was brought to the hospital in a land cruiser and appeared pale and covered in blood. The source added that the victim had one stab wound to the base of the left side of his neck. That laceration, the source said, was some 4 to 5cm deep, and had not only severed the left carotid artery, but the left jugular vein as well. |
