COME Sunday May 20, the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC), located at Bush Lot Corentyne, will be buzzing with activity when the club hosts its annual Pre-Independence horse race meeting. Seven races are carded for the day, with the feature event being the D and Lower classified horses which covers a distance of one mile and has a first prize of $500 000, with the second-, third- and fourth-place horses receiving $250 000, $125 000 and $100 000 respectively.
Entries for this event close next Sunday and the entrance fee per horse is $3 000. Horse owners and trainers are asked to pay fees at the time of entering their charges for a specific race. Failure to do so will result in the horse’s name not being printed on the official programme for the day’s event.
As is customary, races will be run under the rules and regulations of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), where five horses must be in the starters’ gate for a third prize to be paid, and a further two horses must face the starter for a fourth-place prize to be paid.

To date, Mohammed’s Enterprise, Demerara Distillers Limited, General Equipment and Farm Suppliers, Yunas Contracting Service, Anirude Ramcharitar, Pomeroon Oil Mill, H. Nauth and Sons Civil Engineering Contractors and Ariel Enterprise of Regent Street, have contributed towards the successful staging of this event.
Meanwhile, the club is reminding horse racing fans and enthusiasts that their programme for the year following this meeting will feature races on May 20, August 12, October 14 and the big Boxing Day meeting on December 26.
