‘Married man’ assaults woman for breaking off engagement with him
- defendant remanded
FREDRICK Henry, 32, of Lot ‘F’ Victoria Road Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was yesterday remanded to prison on two counts of assault.

He appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stated that on November 18, 2009, he unlawfully assaulted Julia Kanhai and on the said day, he assaulted the said Julia Kanhai so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

Police Sergeant Krishnandat Ramana, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant and the defendant were engaged and after the virtual complainant found out that the defendant was already married, she broke off the relationship.

The prosecutor said the defendant saw the virtual complainant on the road and confronted her after she was avoiding him. He said Henry asked Kanhai to spend some time with her since it was her birthday and because she refused, he cuffed her on her head.
Ramana said the virtual complainant managed to escape and the defendant caught up with her at another location and tried to force her in a car. He said a police officer who was nearby, saw the incident and render assistance to the virtual complainant.

Sophia woman on larceny charge granted $300,000 bail
DENISE Hillman, 41, of Lot 490 ‘A’ field Sophia appeared yesterday before Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer a larceny charge.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on June 20, 2009, she stole $560,000 property of Muneshwar Travel Service.

Patrice Henry represented the defendant and requested for reasonable bail. He said the woman is one of many customers who went to the office on the day the money went missing. He claimed that after a raid was conducted in Sophia, police arrested his client and pin the charge on her alone.

Police Inspector Mr. Stephen Telford objected to bail and stated that the defendant has been implicated in another matter, in which investigations are still continuing.

However, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $300,000 and order that the defendant report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday until her next court date, which was set for November 30. (N.DeFreitas)
